A CARE home threw a special party to help one of its residents mark her 100th birthday.

Queenie Jones was joined by friends and family at Sandringham Care Home, in Bishop Auckland, for the celebration.

Mrs Jones, nee Flemming, was born in Dawson Street, Crook, on May 30, 1919 and left school at 14 to work in the home of the Roddymoor colliery manager.

She then went to Bridlington to work in a hotel and later moved to London to work for a Jewish family who owned a shop.

She returned to the region when she met miner James Jones and the couple married in St Cuthbert’s Catholic Church, Crook, on September 29, 1941.

They enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage before he died.

Their daughter and son-in-law Eileen and Ralph Goodwin, grandson Stephen and his wife Catherine and great grandchildren Lewis, Ella and Ruby are her greatest love in life.

Mrs Goodwin said: “She is a wonderful grandmother and great grandmother, she idolises them.”
