VOLUNTEERS who aim to brighten and tidy up their community have held days of action to pick up litter and fill planters.

The recently-formed West Auckland in Bloom was joined by volunteers and staff from nearby packaging factory Smurfitt Kappa on Saturday.

They placed ten planters around the village green full of plants that will flower throughout the summer and which will be replaced in autumn.

Money raised for the planters came from grants, donations an afternoon tea event supported by Highcroft school, in Cockfield, and a coffee morning held in the village in February.

In the spring the volunteers and members of the Smurfitt Kappa workforce were joined by youngsters from the local Beavers, Cubs and Scouts groups for a litter pick around the village.

The group hopes to get more planters for the village and encourages people to do their bit to keep West Auckland looking good.
