A NORMANDY veteran is expected to attend a ceremony to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day which will be held in Bishop Auckland tomorrow.

The service will be at Bishop Auckland War Memorial, in the Market Place, at 6.30pm, and the public is welcome to attend to pay their respects.

The Royal British Legion, SSAFA, DLI Association, Malay and Borneo veterans, REME Association and Air Cadets will be represented and Bishop Auckland Pipes and Drums will play. Ruth Wright, treasurer of SSAFA Wear Valley and secretary of the Bishop Auckland Royal British Legion, and her husband Michael Donne, chairman of SSAFA Durham, both of whom are ex-military, have organised the ceremony.

Mrs Wright said: "We are very honoured to have one of the few surviving Normandy veterans laying a wreath at the ceremony.

"We have to commemorate this, it was the start of the campaign which gave Europe freedom and we cannot forget the sacrifice those people made."
