A DANCE and gymnastic club ran by former GB gymnast had great success at first competition.

Hannah Goggin established her dance and gymnastic club Astrid Academy of Movement in September 2018.

Based at Kirk Merrington school near Spennymoor, Ms Goggin founded the club with business partner David Castling.

When first established, the club had just five members and ran general gymnastic, acrobatic and dance classes. However, in early 2019 class schedules had to be restructured to facilitate the attendance of more members. Subsequently, the club now has around 140 members who attend weekly classes with the aim to improve their dance and gymnastics skills, have fun and build their confidence in a safe and friendly environment.

Astrid Academy of Movement now runs 13 different gymnastics classes which cater for pre-school through to advanced acrobatic squads.

On April 13 and 14, 37 Astrid gymnasts ranging from four to 16 years old, competed in their very first competition, just seven months after the club opened.

There were many competitors per category, with one including 24 entrants. Nevertheless, Astrid Academy of Movement gymnasts performed exceptionally and won ten gold medals, four silver medals and six bronze medals.

Ms Goggin said: “Myself and the other coaches are so proud of everybody that participated. We only opened seven months ago so it’s incredible to see how our gymnasts have progressed and been able to do so well in their first competition. They work incredibly hard and always give maximum effort in classes. We can’t wait to see them grow even more and continue to work to such high standards.”
