A FOOTBALL club is searching for players to join its first ever women's squad.

Spennymoor Town Youth FC will launch a senior ladies team for the 2019/20 season.

The move is part of a long term plan to increase female participation in the game.

Academy manager Andy Lowe said: "This is an amazing opportunity for female players to be part of our National League club.

"Female football is the most popular sport in our country, with the women’s World Cup in the summer and the success of our national women’s teams, there has never been a better time to develop women’s and girls' football.

"I have been inundated with queries about girls' and women’s teams over the past four months.

"We were recently awarded an FA approved Wildcats centre and the introduction of our ladies team will ensure we have a clear pathway and more importantly an opportunity for girls, women and female coaches in the local and surrounding areas under our #ONECLUB strategy.

"It would be amazing in the next five years to have a female programme that matches our male provision."
