A CHARITY founder has received a national award in honour of his work supporting families affected by cancer.

Mark Solan, of the Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust, was presented the award by Bishop Auckland MP Helen Goodman, on behalf of the Prime Minister.

The charity provides advice services and relaxation rooms for cancer patients and their families. It also offers small grants to improve wellbeing and quality of life.

Mr Solan said: “To receive recognition for helping local families leaves me feeling both very proud and very humbled.

"To see how my small community has rallied around to support me in my quest to help those in need is nothing short of inspirational, and it’s from the support that I receive and the help that I give that I find my inspiration and motivation to do what we do every day.”

In a personal letter Prime Minister Theresa May said: “The success of the Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust, in memory of your mother and grandmother, is a testament to your passion and dedication to improve the lives of those living with cancer."
