A TOWN council raised the flag to mark two special dates on the calendar.

Chilton Town Council's Mayor Michael Young was joined by residents on Wednesday, to raised the official County Durham flag on County Durham Day.

Councillor Young asked James Moffatt to raise the flag outside the council offices on Durham Road.

Mr Moffatt and his twin daughters Holly and Katie won a competition to design the flag in 2013.

The Mayor said: "The residents of Chilton are proud of their heritage and history and association with Durham. To have the Durham Flag designed by two of our young people is such an honour to them and the community of Chilton."

On Monday, March 11 the council flew a flag to mark Commonwealth Day. Nations celebrated the day with activities including faith and civic gatherings, debates, school assemblies, street parties and cultural events based on the theme of A Connected Commonwealth.
