Actor and professional ringmaster Chris Barltrop– former resident of Durham and Bishop Auckland– presents Audacious Mr Astley at the Discovery Museum, in Newcastle, on Saturday, March 16.

Famous for his exploits in battle during the Seven Years’ War, the displays of trick-riding he and his wife gave on an open field an Lambeth, London, from Easter 1768 led to the development and spread of a new entertainment known across the world as ‘circus’.

Chris Barltrop, former marketing manager of Newcastle Theatre Royal, wrote and stars in the one-man play which was awarded five stars at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and has been widely praised in entertainment and literary circles.
