A SCHOOLGIRL netball player has gained her first international caps at the European championships.

Barnard Castle School student Carla McKnight played wing attack for Scotland at the International Netball Federation European Championships, in Huddersfield.

The Year 11 pupil was born in England but qualified for Scotland as her parents are from north of the border.

She met up with former team and schoolmate Ella Bowen, who was competing in the same U17s competition for England, but injury prevented them playing against each other.

The 16-year-old said: “It was an amazing experience taking part in my first international and I came away with four caps. We beat Ireland and UAE and had a very close match with Wales, which I really enjoyed. The standard was a real step up but my coach and all the premiership squad from my team Oakways, who came to watch, said I played well.”

Carla, of Lartington, has been playing for the past eight years and enjoyed success at her club Oakways Hartlepool.

“I was really excited to be selected for Scotland and my family was delighted," she added.
