PLANS for two new food stores in Barnard Castle have been submitted to Durham County Council.

An outline planning application has been put forward by Consolidated Property Group (CPG) for a new Lidl discount foodstore and a Home Bargains store, on the former Addisons auction house site in Staindrop Road.

The multi-million pound scheme, if approved, will create about 60 full and part-time equivalent local jobs and work onsite could commence in early 2020 with store openings by Christmas that year.

There would also be space for144 car parking spaces including parent and toddler, disabled and electric vehicle charging spaces and all vehicle access would be off Staindrop Road on the A688.

A public consultation display for the proposals was held at The Witham, in Barnard Castle, last November.

CPG’s managing director, Martin Ridgway: “The auction house site has been vacant for three years and this development will bring a prominent and accessible brownfield site back into use.

"At the public consultation held in the town centre in late November, the vast majority of those who attended supported the scheme and the proposed retailers given the lack of choice in the town.

“These new stores will help address local shopping requirements as it is evident that most people drive to Bishop Auckland to do their main shopping.

"The proposed scheme will therefore deliver significant environmental and sustainability benefits by increasing the options for shopping locally, potentially reducing the need for longer car journeys and associated vehicle emissions”.
