CELEBRATIONS have been held at a Newton Aycliffe care home to mark the 100th birthday of one of its residents.

Elizabeth Smithson was treated to a party complete with entertainment and cake yesterday at Lindisfarne Care Home, in Silverdale Place.

Decorations were up for the centenarian who received a telegram from the Queen congratulating her on the special day.

Organised by the care home’s activities coordinators Rebecca Robertson and Wendy Rogers, the occasion featured a performance from singer Wor Vera, who delivers renditions of tunes from the 1940s era.

Mrs Smithson has lived most of her life in Leasingthorne, near Bishop Auckland, and moved into the Newton Aycliffe care home in 2013.

She went to school in nearby Chilton and was a shop keeper.

A lover of dancing, Mrs Smithson was married to her late husband Joseph.

The pair had two daughters, Lynne and Dorothy.
