DEDICATED volunteers who have worked tirelessly on a Weardale village's festive lights say they will not be deterred after their Christmas tree was vandalised.

Heidi Maddison, chairwoman of the Light Up The Dale community group, said she was disappointed to find the tree in Stanhope had been vandalised by youths on Wednesday night when they had tried to pull the lights and baubles off, leaving the top bent.

She put out an appeal on the group's Facebook page in a bid to deter the vandals but said it would not ruin the lights switch on which is happening today, in St Thomas' Church, at 4.55pm.

Stanhope Silver Band will also be performing while a lantern parade will start at the church hall at 4.50pm.

Ms Maddison thanked all the residents and businesses who had supported the group, which brought the tree back to Stanhope last year after a long break.

"We have had lots of positive comments," she said. "We have also been able to put lights on the lime trees this year too."

Ms Maddison said the group had also supported installations in Frosterley, Cows Hill and St John's Chapel and said new members were always welcome.
