TWO charities connected to the armed forces were given a boost in funds recently thanks to generous local people.

That's after The Grand Hotel, in Bishop Auckland, held a charity night for the Wear Valley Division of SSAFA and the Bishop Auckland branch of The Royal British Legion.

The proprietor and his partner, Derek and Valerie wanted to be able to help veterans in the Bishop Auckland and surrounding area where there is an increasing amount of veterans of all ages suffering from social isolation due to a number of reasons including age, difficulty in the transition from service to civilian life and unemployment.

They presented a cheque for £1,359.48 - to be divided equally - to the chairman of SSAFA in County Durham, Mike Donne and the chairman of Bishop Auckland Royal British Legion, Arthur Middleton. Both expressed their gratitude to all those who had made the charity evening so successful.
