A CHURCH is marking the anniversary of the last train leaving a rural station with a special exhibition.

Heatherycleugh Church in Cowshill, Upper Weardale, will launch the Weardale Railway exhibition on the weekend of June 30 and July 1.

The event will mark the 65th anniversary of when the last passenger train left nearby Wearhead Station in June 1953.

Excitement is building for the event within the dale and organisers are urging anyone who would consider loaning Weardale Railway memorabilia for the exhibition to get in touch.

It is hoped the exhibition, which will open from 12.30pm to 5pm both days, will provide an opportunity for visitors to reminisce and share their memories of travelling on Weardale Railway. After the launch event, the exhibition will open every weekend until the church’s annual garden party on Saturday, August 4. Refreshments will be served in Cowshill Village Hall on June 30, July 1, 7 and 8, and August 4.

Anyone with memorabilia is asked to contact Heather Ross on 01388-537439.
