FRANK Sinatra topped the charts when romance blossomed for a couple who are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

Bill and Rita Walton, from Chilton, met as teenagers at Woolworths, in Bishop Auckland, where Mrs Walton worked on the music counter.

The couple married at Holy Trinity Church, in West Cornforth, and honeymooned in London.

Mr Walton, who was born in Cockfield, worked at Wigglesworth Colliery and went onto become a psychiatric nurse at Winterton and Aycliffe hospitals, while Mrs Walton was a nurse at Bishop Auckland Hospital’s A&E department.

They still live in the same house in the Chilton which they bought 59 years ago.

The couple have three children, nine grandchildren and are looking forward to the birth of their first great-grandchild.

Durham County Council’s chairman councillor Jan Blakey presented a basket of flowers of the couple to mark their 60th wedding anniversary earlier this month.

They were also visited by the Mayor of Chilton, councillor Elizabeth Bruce.

She said: “It was absolutely wonderful to meet up with such lovely people and hear all about their magnificent lives together.

“They had some great tales and memories to tell and are clearly adored by their families.”
