Richmond Tourist Information Centre is now selling Diamond Jubilee commemorative items, to mark the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II.
Princess Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, died on 6 February 1952 at the age of 56. The King, who had reigned for 16 years, died peacefully in his sleep.
The young Princess, who was only 25 years old at the time, was on tour in Kenya when she heard the news of her father’s death. Elizabeth returned to England in mourning, and awaiting accession to the throne. She was proclaimed Queen immediately, although the actual coronation was not until June 2nd 1953.
The TIC is open Mondays to Saturdays from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Contact them on 01748 828742
