THE family of a teenager who completed a sponsored swim in aid of an Armed Forces charity have thanked the leisure centre that helped her to complete the challenge.
Rebekah Johnson, 15, from Richmond, swam 100 lengths of Catterick Leisure Centre in under an hour and a quarter, equivalent to 2.5km.
Her effort has raised more than £200 for Help For Heroes, which Rebekah supports because her father is a serving soldier, who recently returned from a six month tour of Afghanistan.
Karen Johnson, Rebekah’s mother, thanked staff at Catterick Leisure Centre for making sure the charity swim went ahead.
She said: "Another pool in the area wanted to charge us £30 to rent a lane in the pool for the swim but when Catterick heard that they said straight away that we could do it for free.
"I want to thank the manager Les Mooney and Paula McFarlane, who runs the swimming clubs that Rebekah attended years ago.
"Rebekah did really well and managed to keep swimming for over an hour to achieve her target."
