ONE of North Yorkshire's most popular visitor attractions has been opened up again after a major move to control traffic and ensure safety.
When Bolton Abbey estate reopened, extra signage, a one way system, additional toilets and hand washing facilities were put in place, alongside security staff and pre booked tickets to make sure the Yorkshire Dales attraction could cope.
Originally there had been problems after many visitors turned up without pre booked tickets causing mayhem parking on yellow lines and causing obstructions.
Harrogate Borough Council enforced parking on yellow lines and North Yorkshire police made sure that any motorists blocking roads were dealt with.
Andrew Clare, Senior Traffic Manager for North Yorkshire said: "The feedback was our efforts assisted greatly, particularly with the large volume of motorists who ignored advice and without a pre-booked parking ticket, parking on yellow lines and in locations affecting road safety and accessibility. When the enforcement teams were on site motorists clearly got the message."
Estate Director Ben Heyes said there had been issues controlling access: "The support we have had from highways enforcement and the police has been clearly evident and extremely welcome."
