A TOWN'S iconic art work is leading the way in keeping the safety message going amid the Coronavirus crisis.

The family of steel deer in Bedale which welcome visitors to the town from the bypass have been decked out with their own home made masks by a well wisher.

The striking models regularly become adorned with fitting accessories to reflect what is happening in the world with Christmas hats during the festive season and love hearts at valentines. But this time supporters wanted to get the deer involved in reminding people about the most important message of staying safe during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The specially sculpted family of deer have been guarding the entrance to the town since 2018 when they were commissioned as part of a public art scheme through the Arts Council partially funded through donations from developers involved in local housebuilding schemes.

The group sculpture reflects the town's medieval deer park and was created by artists Brian and George Fell from the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
