Fearless Jasmine Harrison from North Yorkshire is in training to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic taking on the worlds toughest race – on her own.

Jasmine Harrison, 20, wants to become the youngest woman ever to row across an ocean solo, and reckons the Atlantic is the one to go for.

She is currently training, holding down two jobs and trying to raise money at the same time.

What is even more astonishing is Jasmine isn’t even that keen on rowing, although she’s been a lifelong swimmer, competing at national level.

Born in Sowerby, she teaches swimming at the town’s Leisure Centre while also working as a bartender at the Little 3 pub.

It was while travelling alone around the Caribbean, after completing her A-levels, she saw the boats arriving at the finish line in Antigua for the Talisker Atlantic Challenge and was inspired.

She said: “It wasn’t the big finish that pulled me in, it was the idea of rowing across the Atlantic on my own.

“I like doing things alone, especially adventurous and challenging things it really gives me a buzz.

“And the idea of rowing alone for 100 days or more was just so fascinating.

“This is a life-changing race and I just can’t wait to take it on.”

Jasmine is planning to raise money for the Shelterbox charity which provides vital food, water and tents for people in the aftermath of natural disasters.

She said: “It was while I was in the Caribbean I saw the aftermath of the hurricanes in 2017 and discovered the really important work that Shelterbox was doing.”

Jasmine is now facing the task of trying to raise over £75,000, but is still determined to go it alone.

“I haven’t yet met anyone I could row across an ocean with.

“I don’t have any fear of the race – it’s a challenge.

“So many people have a perception that just because you are young and female that you can’t do something, so here I am doing exactly that.

“I could be the youngest solo female to ever row an ocean.

“I want to try and inspire more young people, particularly girls, to just give something a go.

“The more it scares you the greater achievement.”

In Thirsk she is being sponsored by JDW fitness and spends hours working out at their gym in Woodstock Way.

The race sets off from La Gomera in the Canary Islands in December. Jasmine has set up a website to tell her story and create support, rudderlymad.co.uk
