A FOODBANK has been given a boost thanks to the work of a caring young volunteer.

Evie, a year 9 student at Richmond School and Sixth Form College, has been a dedicated volunteer at the Hambleton Foodshare for two years, where she serves customers at the weekly ‘Soup and Roll’ fundraising events during the school holidays.

In the run-up to Christmas, which can be a very difficult, stressful and expensive time for families who are struggling to make ends meet, Evie wanted to do something extra and put together her own appeal at school.

She has been overwhelmed with the response, with a huge haul of provisions donated.

These will be taken to the Foodshare where the group’s team of 90 volunteers will distribute the donations to those in need.

Evie is the youngest volunteer at the Hambleton Foodshare and Alison Grainger, coordinator, said: “Evie is a regular volunteer during the school holiday. It is great to have young people on the team as keen to help as Evie.

"She has a wonderful ‘can-do attitude’ and gets on extremely well with her fellow helpers and all our customers.”

Evie started volunteering at the Foodshare after visiting with her mum, who is currently studying for a degree in social work.

She said: “I find the work my mum is doing really interesting and wanted to support those people who are less well off than ourselves."

Headteacher Jenna Potter praised Evie's efforts.
