HOPS grown as part of the 'Just the Job' social enterprise have been used to produce the group's first ever ale.

The Richmond-based charity provides adults with work experience in gardening.

The group grew hops at a community orchard which, along with other hops grown locally, have been used to make an ale.

The 4 per cent bitter was produced at the Darwin Brewery and Gavin Sutherland of Darwin said: “It is challenging to brew with only small amounts of fresh hops as we don’t know the characteristics which vary with the location and weather.

"However, the hops this year were very fresh and provided distinctive flavours.

"We look forward to more extensive brews next year.”

The beer is on sale at the George and Dragon in Hudswell and the Fox and Hounds in West Witton with contributions going to Just the Job.

The community orchard is managed by Just the Job with many different fruit trees becoming mature and producing a first batch of apple juice this year.

A Just the Job ale expands the range of products and is an example of how local produce can feed into the community.
