A TEENAGE bricklayer from Northallerton has been named the UK’s most inspirational apprentice.

Andrew Sykes, 19, won the Inspirational Apprentice of the Year at the 2019 Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Apprenticeship Awards.

Mr Sykes, who works for family-owned construction company Walter Thompson, was presented with his award at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall by broadcaster and property entrepreneur, Sarah Beeny.

Mr Sykes said: “I am so pleased and at the same time shocked to win this award.

“My apprenticeship has been a great experience and I would fully recommend it as a route to a brilliant career, because you get the balance of learning and the practical experience.

“I’d like to thank Walter Thompson as they supported me all the way in my apprenticeship.”

Paul Hammerton, managing director of Walter Thompson, accompanied Mr Sykes to London for the CITB Award, and said: “We’re thrilled for Andrew, but not surprised as we know how good he is. “He has a very bright future ahead of him.

“Andrew’s recent and well deserved successes show how seriously we take our training.”

Northallerton-based Walter Thompson is one of the largest privately-owned construction companies in the region.
