AN ANIMAL rescue centre has had its shop taken over by a new manager who plans to hold craft activities and events for youngsters and families.

Jess Wright, from Richmond, has taken over the gift shop at Wetheriggs Animal Rescue, at Thorpe Farm Centre, near Barnard Castle, off the A66.

Ms Wright said she had been looking for a charity shop to take over in Richmond but had not found anywhere suitable and affordable – but when she took a trip to Wetheriggs with her daughter she fell in love with it.

She said: "I just loved it here, with all the animals and the great work it does to rehabilitate wild animals, and rehome some domestic ones, but also keeping ones that can't be rehomed for whatever reason.

"I spoke to the owner, Terry Bowes, and he suggested I take over the shop. We got some painters in and rearranged it, and I'm hoping to start holding paint a pot sessions for children, and I'm planning some special Christmas craft activities."

Wetheriggs houses horses, goats, pigs, ducks and quails in 25 acres of fields and a barn.

The shop currently stocks toys, tee-shirts and books.

Ms Wright added: "We want to introduce puppet shows in the future to talk about the history of Wetheriggs and about our conservation message in a way that is fun for children. We are also always looking for volunteers who are keen to get involved with the animals and even help with painting and fence building." Visit facebook.com/wetheriggsanimalrescue.
