SCHOOLCHILDREN across North Yorkshire will receive a special guest to help celebrate the UCI World Road Championships coming to the region.

Mandy Bishop (née Jones) won the Elite Women’s Road Race the last time the Championships were held in Great Britain back in 1982. She is visiting 11 schools across the region and will be bringing the rainbow jersey and medal she won that day, along with a host of goodies.

Mrs Bishop will visit Mill Hill Primary School in Northallerton and Richmond Primary School on Monday before finishing her tour at Holy Trinity Junior School in Ripon on Friday.

She said: “Becoming World Champion was one of the proudest moments of my life and I’m hugely honoured to be sharing my story with schoolchildren across Yorkshire. It’s fantastic that the county is hosting the Championships this year as it’s the perfect way to fire people up about cycling and encourage the next generation to give it a go."
