THE 219th year of the world’s oldest gooseberry show is taking place in North Yorkshire.

Since 1800, competitors have strived to grow the largest berry in one of four colours, and these traditions continue today.

There are also categories for heaviest twins, heaviest dozen and half dozen plus the champion grower, awarded for consistency across all classes.

Grower Graeme Watson will be looking to defend his title from last year but will face stiff competition from Bryan Nellist, former holder of the world record for the heaviest gooseberry.

Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show is held at St Hedda’s Roman Catholic School in Egton Bridge, near Whitby, on Tuesday, August 6.
