A CHARITY that has helped provide annual respite trips for the children of Chernobyl is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The Friends of Chernobyl's Children Northallerton Group are welcoming 16 children to the town for four weeks from June 17 to continue its tradition of hosting children from the Ukrainian region hit by nuclear disaster in 1986.

Simon Bailes Peugeot is partnering the group for the 21st year and director Simon Bailes has organised a sail day for the children with the Ocean Youth Trust North.

As well as this, each child will visit medical centres for vital health and wellbeing checks, and will also be treated to new clothes and shoes as well as a variety of fun and educational activities.

Alison Shepherd, co-ordinator of the Northallerton group, said: “We are indebted to Simon for his kindness and generosity to us over the years.

"Providing a new pair of shoes for so many children makes such a vital difference.

"Most of these children come in hand-me down clothing and shoes that don’t fit. For most it’s the first time they will have had their feet measured properly.

“Simon also takes our group out for a full day’s activity. Last year the children had a brilliant day at Beamish."
