TALKS in Swaledale Museum recommence on Wednesday, June 5, when Shaun Richardson will present a paper on some of his most recent research into coal mining in the dales – Landscape with Horses: Coal Mining at Tan Hill and Kings Pit Collieries.
With a working life of more than 700 years the collieries have been the subject of previously unpublished documentary research by the late Les Tyson and new detailed measured earthwork survey carried out by Ed Dennison Archaeological Services Ltd.
Mr Richardson will draw on both of these to give an outline history of the pits, focusing particularly on the structures associated with raising the coal by horse power.
The talk, in memory of a great supporter of the museum, the late John Squires, begins at 7.30pm and advance booking is essential.

Tickets are £4 for Friends of the Museum and £5 for non-members.
