AN outdoor enthusiast is preparing for his second challenge in less than 12-months to raise funds in memory of his mum.

Dave Herron from Thirsk and fellow fundraiser, Jason Oglesby, will tackle the National Three Peaks Challenge in 24-hours on May 25 to raise money for Marie Curie.

In August last year, Mr Heron led a team of six people to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge and raised over £1,300 for charity.

Mr Heron's mum Jeanette Herron was cared for by Marie Curie nurses during her battle with leukaemia before her death in April 2018 and she has been the inspiration behind his fundraising feats.

He explained: “Losing mum was the hardest thing I have ever faced in my life but I made her a promise and vowed not only to keep her memory alive but to fight for the things that she held dear. "Marie Curie nurses cared for mum at home to the end of her time and they were angels in our time of desperate need.

"We could not fault the level of service they provided to mum as well as supporting the rest of the family to come to terms with the situation.

"It therefore seemed fitting to raise money for the charity as a way of acknowledging the dedication of the nurses, to extend our heartfelt thanks and to help ensure more people have access to the invaluable service. I know it would make mum immensely proud.”
