NORTH Yorkshire residents are encouraged to start composting food and garden waste by taking up an offer of discounted compost converter bins.

The initiative is designed to help people in the county reduce their carbon footprint by turning kitchen and garden waste at home into a free supply of compost for gardening. It is estimated a third of an average household’s waste can be converted in this way, rather than being sent for disposal.

Now North Yorkshire County Council has teamed up with to offer residents discounted compost converters online for home delivery.

The bins are made from 100 per cent recycled plastic, which includes a combination of plastics collected by councils from waste segregation sites and kerbside collections. The offer has been launched for International Compost Awareness Week, which runs from May 5 to May 11.
