AN iconic swing bridge is to temporarily close to vehicles following an upcoming town's event.

The swing bridge in Whitby will remain open for pedestrian use, but will be closed to traffic on four dates, in the interests of safety.

The bridge is being closed during Whitby's 'Goth Weekend,' which is taking place on Saturday, April 13, Sunday, April 14, Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28.

Councillor Don Mackenzie of North Yorkshire County Council said: "The safety of pedestrians and road users is our first concern.

"We expect that during the Goth events pedestrian numbers will increase to a point where it isn’t safe for people and vehicles to use the bridge together.

"We apologise for any inconvenience, but safety must be our first consideration.”

The bridge will reopen in between the two weekends.
