More than £6,000 has been raised by a steel specialists in its last donation to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Thirsk-based Severfield plc which helped in the construction of The Shard in London and London's Olympic Stadium have spent the past seven years raising £19,433.45 for the county's air ambulance service.

The air ambulance, which has two helicopters, is an independent charity and does not receive direct funding from the government.

However, staff at Severfield plc's Dalton facility in Thirsk, North Yorkshire have thrown their support behind the charity, hosting social and sport events, cake sales, raffles and pumpkin carving sessions.

Mark Staniforth Severfield production planning manager said: "The Yorkshire Air Ambulance continues to be Severfield’s chosen local charity to support and we look forward to being proactive again during 2019 to help raise much needed funds for the charity."

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance spends over £12,000 on daily running costs.

Liv Mulligan of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance said: "We would like to thank Severfield for their generosity and ongoing support over the last seven years. Their regular donations help greatly towards the vital funding of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, especially in the rural area of North Yorkshire where they are based ."
