A YOUNGSTER is hoping to cut it in the world of hairdressing after winning an apprenticeship.

Jade Walker, who is now studying an NVQ Level 2 in hairdressing at Darlington College, has been taken on by Salon Beautique in Leyburn Market Place.

The business was able to employ 16-year-old Jade as as apprentice thanks to a grant from Richmondshire District Council.

Salon owner Becci Evemy used £504 of the money to buy hairdressing kit for Jade’s college course and equipment for the salon - including a hairdryer, straighteners and clippers.

The council’s grant scheme enables Richmondshire businesses to apply for up to £2,000 to take on an apprentice.

Since its launch in March this year, a total of 18 young people have been helped by the grants.

Council Leader, Councillor Yvonne Peacock said: “This scheme is helping to support local businesses to bring local people on to their staff role.

“We have already seen 18 in new jobs – and we have funding for more.” Businesses can contact Samantha.coultish@richmondshire.gov.uk for details.
