AN adventurous fundraiser will trek across glaciers and mountains in Argentina next month in aid of a children’s charity.

Gemma Lumley, who lives in York, sets out for Patagonia on November 3 to embark on the challenging but beautiful 12-day trek.

The 37-year-old, who together with her husband runs a copywriting business called Urban Media Publishing, began fundraising for the NSPCC three years ago.

Gemma said: “I raise money for the NSPCC because it’s a charity that’s close to my heart. I think the work that it does is really important.

“In 2010, I climbed Kilimanjaro and got addicted to doing these challenges. It’s an amazing feeling when you’ve done one and survived it. You just need to be willing to get out of your comfort zone.”

Her feats have included the Great North Run, the Great Manchester Run dressed as Pantosaurus, Everest Base Camp and the Yorkshire Peak Challenge. She has also run local fundraising events in York.

All the money raised by the mother-of-two will go to the NSPCC, which runs a variety of services in York, including Letting the Future in that helps children who have been sexually abused to rebuild their lives.

The charity also visits primary schools, talking to children about their right to be safe from abuse and neglect. In 2017/18, NSPCC volunteers and staff delivered Speak out Stay safe assemblies in 224 primary schools and spoke to 38,416 children in North Yorkshire.

Anyone who has concerns that a child is experiencing neglect or abuse, can contact the NSPCC’s free and confidential helpline on 0808 800 5000. Children and young people with any worries can contact Childline on 0800 1111 or www.childline.org.uk. Watch this new video to find out more about what the NSPCC does.
