THREE books looking at the history, landscape and community life in Swaledale are now on sale in a Richmond book shop.

Castle Hill Bookshop already has a wide selection of books on Richmond and the Dales but has introduced two new titles and a reissue of a book originally published in the 1960s.

Carol Watson from Castle Hill Bookshop said: “Our customers are very interested in books about the Dales."

Heart of the Dales by D Mark Thompson is predominately a pictorial journey through the Yorkshire Dales during the 1970s and 1980s

Inspired by Ronald Blythe’s Akenfield, the author set out to capture what was to become the last bastion of a simplicity and way of life little changed for over a century.

Secret Richmond and Swaledale by Andrew Graham Stables, a resident of Barnard Castle, takes a look at the lesser known facts about the area, and is well illustrated with colour photographs.

Men of Swaledale, by Edmund Cooper, was first published in the 1960s and this new edition has been reissued and expanded.

It uses original letters, journals and day-books, covering the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
