THE former boss of iconic tearoom Bettys has written a children's book based in the wilds of Africa – which will support conservation work across the continent.
The Mud Monster by Jonnie Wild, illustrated by Brita Granstrom, is the second in the Five Flamingos series, which takes youngsters on a vivid and exciting trip into the world of African wildlife. Mr Wild, who lives in Harrogate, was the boss of Bettys Tea Rooms for more than 30 years.
His interest in conservation was started by his own children’s distress at learning about the destruction of rainforests.
He set up the Yorkshire Rainforest Project, which protected an area of Peruvian rainforest the same size as the Yorkshire Dales, and now has similar projects all over the world.
His involvement with Flamingo Land’s Udzungwa Forest Project began after he met its founder, Dr Andy Marshall of the University of York, who is also Flamingo Land’s director of conservation. Proceeds will go towards The Udzungwa Forest Project, the flagship project of Flamingo Land.
