CHILDREN at a Northallerton primary school are celebrating after the announcement that the town will host a start of the 2019 Road World Championships.

North Yorkshire’s county town has been selected to host the start of the men’s elite individual time trial on day five of the 2019 Road World Championships, Wednesday, September 25.

Businesses have already enjoyed huge tourism benefits from major cycle races such as the Tour de Yorkshire, with this year’s event estimated to have boosted the local economy by £64m.

Steve Cowley, owner of Cowley Cycles in Zetland Street, Northallerton, said:

“This is the biggest sporting event Northallerton has ever seen and we are thrilled.

"To have so many of the world’s biggest stars on our doorstep will be truly inspirational.

"Not only will the championships bring huge tourism benefits for Northallerton, a high-profile event of this kind will encourage many more people to take up cycling and enjoy all the health benefits that brings.”

Julia Robinson, manager of the Northallerton Business Improvement District, added: “Despite some local disruption with road closures, local businesses are very proud of our town and will work with all partners to ensure Northallerton looks its best when we are featured around the world at the start of this prestigious race.

“The world will be watching, so you can expect a great turnout in the county town!”
