A NEW man is at the controls of a North Yorkshire based jet squadron.

After two years in the job Wing Commander Christian Gleave has handed over the role of officer commanding 100 Squadron to Wing Commander Tony Cann.

The squadron operates a distinctive fleet of Hawk T1 and T1A jets from its base at RAF Leeming, near Bedale.

With a background on Harriers, Wg Cdr Cann has spent the past few years as lead pilot with the Headquarters Number 1 Group team at RAF High Wycombe developing training and establishing fleet management mechanisms for the F35 Lightning jet.

He said: “My first impression of the squadron is great; the team successfully perform a variety of complex roles in a fairly basic jet trainer. This requires capable and well-motivated personnel, which 100 squadron has in abundance.

“In the short term I see the squadron continuing to develop as a centre of excellence providing relevant training for front line units preparing for operations.

“I also want to continue the close liaison initiatives with European forces – and the French in particular.”
