POLICE have launched an investigation after a woman reported she had been raped in a park this morning (Sunday, August 27).
The incident is alleged to have happened at a site off near Adler Close, behind Bensham Grove Community Centre and Bensham Grove Nursery School, in Gateshead, at about 1.30am.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police are investigating a report of rape in Bensham, Gateshead.
“The incident happened at around 1.30am this morning in a park near Adler Close.
“A 39-year-old man has been arrested and remains in police custody.
“The woman has been safeguarded and is receiving specialist support from officers.”
The park was cordoned off for several hours while investigations were carried out.
