THE NHS took over Durham parkrun at the weekend.

With support from local NHS bodies, local parkruns gave their regular events a special NHS theme for the day with NHS staff, patients and the wider public being encouraged to attend.

Runners taking part in the free, 5km races, were encouraged to wear fancy dress, uniforms and bandages.

Around 85,000 runners were expected to take part in 360 NHS-themed parkruns.

It was launched by double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes, who was a nursing assistant before joining the British Army and becoming a full time international athlete.

She said: “NHS staff work hard to support us and parkrun for the NHS is a perfect opportunity for people to show their support for the NHS in its 70th year.”
