VOLUNTEERS collected 23 bags of rubbish, including a scooter, from a village during a spring cleaning event.

Fifteen-year-old Ben Hopson, who is the secretary of Brandon and Meadowfield residents’ group, organised the litter pick in Brandon.

The event was part of Durham County Council’s big spring clean campaign, aimed at tidying up communities.

Ten people took part in the litter pick on Saturday, collecting 23 bags of rubbish, including a scooter, half of a vacuum cleaner and a full bag of glass bottles.

Ben said: “I was overwhelmed with the support from our local community and look forward to organising the next litter pick”

For details on the next litter pick please see Facebook page Brandon and Meadowfield resident group.

Residents can also attend the group’s monthly meetings, which take place on the second Monday of the month at 6.30pm at Sycamore Park, Brandon.

The council is encouraging people to organise litter picks until Sunday, April 15 and will provide equipment and collect the rubbish.
