NEW plans for pig sheds holding around 4,000 animals have been made following objections from people living nearby.

The amended plans have been made by Tim Bates, who wants to build the sheds on land at Biggin House Farm, near New Brancepeth.

The tenant farmer had initially applied for a similar scheme in April but has now made changes following public outcry from people living both nearby and further afield.

Following a public meeting, which was attended by more than 150 people from the area, farm owner Mark Westgarth, who has a farm at Newsham, near Richmond in North Yorkshire, met with residents to discuss the plans.

Following the meeting, the plans have now changed and the proposed sheds would now be further away from the nearest neighbours, and would also be further from Ragpath Wood, an area of protected ancient woodland.

The new site was chosen because it will have more screening and is more isolated, which the applicant says will ensure bio security for the herd by reducing the risk of disease spread.

A statement says: “The buildings have been sensitively placed within the farmland to minimise impact on the surrounding landscape and ensure efficient farm workings. The buildings will provide sustainable, efficient, welfare friendly accommodation for the livestock in line with the clients’ current practises.

“The proposals offer minimal environmental effects and any perceived harm is significantly outweighed by the economic benefits to the farming enterprise and local rural economy.”

The initial application drew criticism from local residents concerned about the number of animals, fears that prevailing winds would blow smells to their homes and that the site would be visible from across the valley.

Resident Keith Pullan, whose property backs onto the farm, said: “I’m happy the new plans have been submitted which is what we were expecting.

“Things have changed a little bit and he has made assurances that there won’t be a great deal of noise and smell which is what we were concerned about and it’s going to be out of sight as well.”

The units would be used for juvenile pigs, brought onto the farm at around 30kgs and kept until they reach around 105kg. They would then be transported to local slaughter facilities.
