THE A1 has reopened following a three-vehicle crash.

Emergency services attended the crash, which happened on the northbound carriageway of the A1 near junction 61 at Bowburn.

The road had been closed in both directions between junctions 61 and 62, between Bowburn and Carrville, near Durham, but has since re-opened.

A BMW, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Scirocco were involved in the crash, which happened at around 1.45pm.

The Great North Air Ambulance, which attended the scene, said a woman in her forties was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A GNAAS spokesperson said she had chest, back and arm injuries and was stable on arrival at hospital.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said it had taken one person to the University Hospital of North Durham.

Earlier in the day, NEAS said it had dispatched its Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), a double crewed ambulance and had requested support from the air ambulance.

A police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 1.45pm to reports of a three vehicle collision on the A1m.
