YESTERDAY’S weather failed to dampen the appetite of hundreds of people who attended a “Feed the 1000” food festival.
The event in Chester-le-Street featured a Pay-As-You-Feel banquet created from food which would have otherwise been wasted by local cafés, supermarkets and suppliers.
The event was supported by Durham County Council and Sainsbury’s supermarket, and was hosted by local organisation REfUSE, which recently opened a full-time pay-as-you-feel café in Chester-le-Street high street.
Nikki Dravers, one of the organisers of yesterday’s festival, said: “It was a good way to raise awareness of the fight against food waste. We had some good feedback from people keen to support the work we do and we were able to give people tips and ideas about reducing their waste at home and using up their surplus food.”
