OLD and young have been spending time together over afternoon tea at a pop-up cafe designed to get the generations to mix.

Children from Selby Cottage Childcare Centre, in Chester-le-Street, have been sharing tea and enjoying arts and crafts activities with elderly residents who live nearby.

The Pop Up Café and Crafts sessions are taking place for six weeks, with the first one taking place at the centre at the beginning of the month.

Cllr Olwyn Gunn, from Durham County Council, said: “The first Pop Up Café session was a real success and it was clear that when young and old come together, everyone benefits.

“This project helps reduce isolation felt by some of the older generation while children learn a great deal from their stories and experiences.”

Sessions take place every Friday on the lawn next to The Close East in South Pelaw until October 6.
