FIREFIGHTERS are expected to stay at the scene of a farm fire for much of the rest of the day.
The blaze, which hit farm buildings in Pelton, near Chester-le-Street, on Sunday morning sent thick black smoke billowing into the air.
Local residents were advised to keep doors and windows shut because of the smoke.
The alert was raised just before 6.30am this morning.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue said five fire appliances had been at the scene, along along with a bulk water carrier.
It said three fire engines would remain at the incident for much of the remainder of the day.
A North East Ambulance Service hazardous area response team was also present.
The brigade said smoke from the fire posed no risk to the public, but anyone with pre-existing respiratory issues who were experiencing symptoms should see their GP.
