SUPERMARKET chain Morrisons is seeking a licence for a new petrol station at the Dalton Park outlet shopping centre.

The retailer has applied for permission to sell alcohol and hot food from the planned store in Murton, County Durham, up to midnight seven days a week.

According to papers submitted with the application for a new premises licence to Durham County Council, if approved, the scheme would permit the sale of booze from 6am every day.

Plans for a petrol station and supermarket to be added to the existing retail park were given the go-ahead by county council planning chiefs back in 2014.

The keys to the site were later handed to Morrisons as part of its £45 million expansion plans into Murton.

But in 2016 shoppers were left in limbo when the retailer put its plans on hold.

Dalton Park, which in recent years has seen a cinema, a pub and several restaurants added to the site, is currently shut due to restrictions in place to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Morrisons has been contacted for further comment.

Comments on the proposals can be submitted to Durham County Council until Monday, June 8.
