A FORMER carer has celebrated her 101st birthday.

Catherine Dawson, who is usually known as Kitty, marked the landmark birthday on January 7.

Mrs Dawson, who is originally from Broompark, near Durham, now lives at Brandon Lodge care home, in nearby Brandon.

The mother-of-three, who attended Neville's Cross School, was one of nine children and used to work as a carer in a nursing home in Leeds, as well as at Durham County Hospital.

After meeting her husband Edward Dawson at a dance, the couple had three sons; Phillip, George and Colin.

She lived in her family home until the age of 98, and moved to Brandon Lodge in 2017.

She tries to stay involved in life at the home by taking part in activities, and enjoys getting her hair done every week.

When asked how she remains so young at heart, Mrs Dawson said: "I don’t know, you tell me”.

It is the second centenarian birthday the home has celebrated in recent weeks.

Resident Florence Hudspeth celebrated her 107th birthday at the home, where she has lived for the last five years, on December 29.
