A MAN and woman have been arrested after a 36-year-old pedestrian was knocked down over the weekend.

Shortly before 12.30am on Saturday, police in Gateshead received a report of a collision involving a dark coloured car and a pedestrian on the A184 Felling Bypass westbound near Whitemare Pool.

Emergency services attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “His family are being supported by specialist officers, and a formal identification process is now underway.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collision, and officers are now keen to hear from members of the public.

“A man and woman, both aged 40, have been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.

“They remain in police custody and are assisting officers with enquiries at this time.”

Enquiries are now being carried out by officers to establish exactly what has happened. Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, or drivers that were in the area at the time and who may have dashcam footage.

The coroner will be informed and an inquest will be held.
