WORK is starting on Monday to extend the car park at one of the region's railway station.

The work is taking place at Durham Station to create an additional 135 spaces by summer 2020.

It means the lower level of the existing car park will be closed from Monday until work is completed next summer, resulting in a temporary reduction in parking available.

A spokesperson for LNER said: "As part of the construction work, the lower level of the existing car park will be closed during this period.

"This means there will be significantly fewer car parking spaces and we apologise in advance for the inconvenience this may cause."

The company has advised railway users that alternative car parking can be found at Durham's Park and Ride at Belmont and Sniperley and at the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) car park in Aykley Heads.

Work to improve the pedestrian access to the station, via its underpass, has now been completed after being closed for several months.
